This song was written for Ken’s wife Lisa. It tells the story of their history – when they were engaged to be married in 1989. For some reason, Ken walked away from the relationship, while she carried on and eventually married, had two children and divorced in 2011.
It was a Saturday morning on November 19th, 2011, around 9:00 AM, when Ken read the Facebook message from Lisa that just said, ‘We sucked as a couple, but were not so bad as friends–you always made me laugh. 20 years later I am mature enough to know that!’
It was good to hear from her after all these years…and Ken let her know. They continued to re-build our friendship which eventually developed into them being married on November 19, 2017.
One of the things Ken held onto from our ‘Round 1’ relationship was an old black and white photo which was kept in a safe. So many times over the years Ken wondered about Lisa and wondered how her life turned out. In the photo she was wearing a dark blouse with a string of pearls. Ken best remember her in some jeans where they met at the East Hartford Police Station. Ken was a Police Explorer Advisor and they both worked for the town.
Such a good idea for a song…so Ken wrote it and everything just started flowing very naturally. Ken guesses some of the best real life stories would do just that if one was telling it to someone else – which is how he tackled this song.
So many things have changed over the years…as did their aging process. It was meant to be and they will always wonder what it would have been like if they married back then.
