About 1886, John moved with his parents to Brule County, South Dakota and grew up around the town of Puckwana. When John was of age he changed his last name. He did not like how Manore sounded and decided to change it to Mesnard. John appears on the 1910 Census for Stanley County, South Dakota. He was 29 years old, and lists his occupation as bartender. The reference for this is Supervisor’s District 2, Enumeration District 100, Sheet 13 B in Stanley County. Later part of Stanley County became Jackson County. John Mesnard married Iva Frances Motter. In 1911, John bought land in Jackson County, South Dakota . He owned a saloon in Belvidere, South Dakota. It was at this saloon that John was involved in a gunfight. The story is that someone stole John’s gun and ran out of the saloon. John ran after the thief and the thief fired at John but the bullet hit the outside wall of the saloon causing a splinter of wood to enter John’s eye. A few days later John traveled to Omaha, Nebraska for medical attention. He died at Omaha on May 27, 1913. He was buried at St. Anthony’s Catholic Cemetery, Pukwana, South Dakota.
